Dr Costas Kadis

Dr Kadis studied at the Department of Biology of the University of Athens, from which he received his degree in 1991 and his doctorate in 1995. He also attended postgraduate programs in Greece and the USA. Dr Kadis worked at the University of Athens as a postdoctoral researcher and then at the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation. In 2005, he returned to academia, where he established the Nature Conservation Research Unit at Frederick University. At the same time, he was elected to the position of Dean of the School of Education. He developed rich research and writing work with wide international recognition.

From July 2007 until February 2008, he served as Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus. In March 2014, he was appointed by President Anastasiades as Minister of Education and Culture, a position he held until February 2018. In March 2018, he was appointed to the new Government of President Anastasiades as Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

This proclamation and honorary distinction of the Biological Society of Cyprus (CBS) is based on the excellent contribution of Dr Costas Kadis to date in the fields of health, environment, education, agriculture and in general his distinguished contribution to the Cypriot society but also to the promotion of life sciences and wider issues. Dr Kadis is a graduate of the Department of Biology of the University of Athens where he worked as a postgraduate collaborator and postdoctoral researcher. Dr Kadis, as Deputy Director of the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, contributed substantially to the promotion and establishment of the research sector in Cyprus. As a university lecturer at Frederick University, he founded the Nature Conservation Research Unit, which participated in dozens of competitive national and European funding programs, contributing greatly to the establishment of the Natura 2000 Network in Cyprus and in general to the protection and conservation of Cypriot nature. At the same time, he developed a rich research and writing work with wide international recognition. Through these works, Dr Kadis has established cooperation networks with dozens of universities, research centres and scientists from Cyprus and beyond 30 countries abroad. Dr Kadis co-ordinated in an exemplary manner three postgraduate programs from the School of Education at Frederick University. From July 2007 until February 2008, he served as Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus. In March 2014, he was appointed by President Anastasiades as Minister of Education and Culture, a position he held until February 2018. As Minister of Education, among other things, he contributed significantly to the educational reform by drafting and modernising the new Curricula for all courses and the implementation of the New Schedule in Primary and Secondary Education of Cyprus. He also introduced the new system of teacher appointment. In March 2018, he was appointed by the new Government of President Anastasiades as Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, contributing greatly to the promotion of agriculture and rural development, the protection of the environment and the establishment of traditional Cypriot products.
