The Cyprus Biological Society (CBS) has established the “Ouranios Ioannides” Postgraduate Biology Student Award. The Award is contested by Cypriot students (holders of the identity of the Republic of Cyprus) of Master’s Degree Biology studying in the Biology Departments of Cyprus, Greece and abroad. The “Ouranios Ioannides” Postgraduate Biology Student Award is awarded annually to the Cypriot Postgraduate Biology Student with the best Postgraduate Thesis.
Rationale for establishing the CBS Postgraduate Biology Student “Ouranios Ioannides”:
The Biological Society of Cyprus (CBS) has placed excellence as one of its core values. In establishing this award, it wishes to reward the Cypriot Postgraduate Biology Student (Master’s Degree) with the best postgraduate thesis Master of Science (MSc) Biology Masters with the best postgraduate thesis and to give impetus to the development of outstanding Postgraduate Thesis in any field of Biology.
Starting a young Biologist Scientist’s career with an Award is a boost and a reward.
Ouranios Ioannides, Biologist, was a Member of the Cyprus Biological Society (CBS). He has worked as a teacher of natural sciences and biology in secondary schools in Cyprus. From 1986-1992 he worked at the Cyprus Academy of Education as a teacher of biology and natural sciences. During the period 1992-1995 he was an educator of teachers at the Cyprus Paedagogical Institute. From 1995-1996 he was a Senior Education Officer of Higher and Higher Education. From 1997 to 1999 he was a professor and academic advisor at La Salle University. With his professional career as well as Minister of Education and Culture he has helped establish the Biology sector in Cyprus education.

Terms and Conditions for participation:
- The candidate must be a postgraduate student (or recently a graduate) from the Department of Biology of Cyprus, Greece or abroad that provides a Master’s degree.
- The candidate must be an identity holder of the Republic of Cyprus.
- The year of completion and / or publication of the postgraduate thesis should be only the previous year of the date of announcement of the awards, that is, for the proclamation of 2020, only the work of 2019 can be accepted. The year of completion and / or publication of the postgraduate thesis should be written on the cover or inside the postgraduate thesis.
- The grade of the postgraduate thesis should be 10/10 or 20/20 or 5/5 or with distinction and in any case the maximum grade of each postgraduate grading system (full marks). The verified grade must be submitted together with the application form.
- The postgraduate thesis and all relevant forms must be submitted within the pre-determined limits and before the Closing Date.
- Candidates can automatically apply to register as Prospective Members of the Cyprus Biological Society (CBS) before the deadline for submission of the application.
- Candidates must present themselves in person (or in exceptional cases their representative) and receive the award at the Official Award Ceremony organised by the Cyprus Biological Society (CBS).
- The Cyprus Biological Society (CBS) reserves the right to display and present all the candidate postgraduate works submitted (after the Official Award Ceremony) as well as photos and videos of the candidates and those present at the Official Award Ceremony, on its website and in the media. g.
- Participation automatically means acceptance of the Terms and Conditions.
Evaluation criteria:
- The scientific excellence of the postgraduate thesis (grades 1-5)
- The quality and scientifically accepted method of writing, organising and presenting the master’s thesis (grades 1-5)
- The number and quality of scientific publications / presentations at scientific conferences that may have arisen because of the postgraduate work (grades 1-5)
- Originality and Innovation of the postgraduate thesis (grades 1-5)
